Santiago-based studio UMWELT (Arturo Schiedegger & Ignacio Garcia Partarrieu) has been named as winner of the 2013 Young Architect’s Program (YAP) in Chile. Their winning proposal, ‘AMBIENT 35 60’, which is scheduled for completion in March 2014, will occupy a 20 x 27 meter site in Santiago’s Parque Araucano with a network of 35, climatically responsive spatial frames that will provide a ‘container for artwork and events.’

The concept was derived from YAP’s historical relation to cultural institutions - MoMA PS1, MAXXI, Istanbul Modern - and the fact that the context of last year’s Chilean YAP was changed from a cultural center to a public park.
With AMBIENT 35 60, UMWELT plans to transform the site into a cultural program itself with the strategic placement of 35 uniquely shaped and positioned frames that will each host an exhibition, event, workshop or concert throughout the installations two-month lifecycle.
UMWELT describes, “As in a Wunderkammer, the container and its contents are mixed into one single spatial entity, blurring the architecture with its program through a particular spatial experience. This will be an accumulative process that evolves and grows over time.”
The network of frames will be connected with mesh and enclosed by translucent curtains to create a strong recognizable entity. In addition, the structure will generate a precisely defined ambient temperature through farming techniques that employ shadows, humidity and water.
